Henry's Story

What can we do about it?

So, what can we do to shift this mental health landscape?
It’s okay if we feel overwhelmed or a little helpless – the reality of young people’s mental health landscape in Australia can be confronting. If we learn how to channel these feelings and frustrations into change, we can make a huge difference for ourselves and our community. We just need the right tools.

One of the most powerful tools in stigma-reduction is lived experience storytelling, so in a second, we will hear from Henry.

Henry is one of batyr’s Storytellers, and he will be sharing about his personal mental health journey. If you feel like you need a breather at any point during Henry’s story, it’s okay to take some time away from the screen. Come back if and when you feel ready to.

Lived experience refers to the personal insight someone gains through directly navigating mental ill-health, including their experiences with seeking help, recovery, and the systems around them. It includes how someone has made sense of their experience, what they’ve learned through it, and how that insight can be shared to support others, reduce stigma, and influence positive change. Lived experience is shaped by social, cultural, and structural factors.

As another reflection exercise, take some time to answer the following:

For someone going through a tough time, what would be the positive impact of listening to a story like Henry’s?
