Max's Story

Asking ourselves these questions and researching our local community or national services, might seem tedious at times. The truth is, available services or their suitability to someone’s situation is likely to change:

  • We might move suburbs or interstate.
  • The service’s capacity or range of offerings might change.
  • Perhaps a new service is introduced that better suits our needs.
  • Or a service we were using is no longer operational.
  • Or the counsellor we gelled with no longer works there.

Change is inevitable. So the benefit of knowing what questions to ask ourselves when identifying a suitable service, and getting acquainted with how we go about looking for what’s out there, is huge.

‍These skills will not only come into practical use for ourselves when we’re ready to be looped in with a professional, but for others in our life, so we can share our knowledge and make that process of connecting with further support a little less daunting by guiding them in the right direction.

Finding the right fit

Finding the right fit when seeking professional support can be tricky, which is why it's worth knowing a variety of options, like we’ve just done!

‍We’ll hear what the process of finding the right professional support was like for Max. It’s important to remember we might not click with someone straight off the bat and that it’s okay to keep looking, just as you would when dating or making a new friend.

It took Max a couple of goes to click with a professional that he felt comfortable to open up to.

‍It’s worth mentioning that some people might find that ideal fit with a professional straight off the bat, but if that doesn’t happen, it can leave us feeling frustrated or lacking hope.

In those moments, it’s helpful to recall Max’s experience and the experience of many others who have gone through the same situation. The level of connection and trust we’re looking for, once we’re ready to open up, is out there. We just have to keep looking for it, and what’s waiting for us is all of the powerful and positive impacts that Max was able to experience by leaning on various support networks.
